We took a drive up to the Kamakou Preserve, 18 miles up a 4 wheel drive dirt road to 3,550 feet and trees, and cooler temps.
Kamakou Preserve is one of the three Nature Conservancy properties on the island. The "good" road ends at Waikolu overlook where we switched to our bikes.
We rode/walked our bikes up to Pu'ukolekole.
After walking through the forest to a dead end we turned around and rode back to the fork in the road to the Pepe'opae bog trail.
This is a "trail" made of two 2x4's with a mesh fence type grid tacked on for traction. It goes up through the moss covered rain forest, out to a mountain bog, then back through the rain forest to one of the most breathtaking overlooks I've ever seen.
We just popped out on the side of the pali and all I could say was "wow" over and over again.
Needless to say there were lots of trees and flowers along the way, there are more than 200 species of plants in this preserve.
We took turns riding our bikes down the road, which was amazing! Riding fast through the trees with all kinds of smells, super fun!
We will be back as there are more trails to explore.
